Community Organizations

We have identified the following GLBTQ Organizations or GLBTQ-friendly Organizations as resources to the Community. If you have any questions about local organizations, feel free to contact us at The Alliance for more information.

Alert Health 

ALERT’s clients are offered a variety of counseling and screening options during a single encounter. The options include counseling and testing for hepatitis A, B and C, HIV, and STDs; on-site treatment for bacterial STDs; and vaccination to prevent liver and cervical cancers. This cost-effective integration of services is well-received by clients, and removes yet another barrier to maintaining good health.

American Civil Liberties Union of Florida

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is our nation’s guardian of liberty, working daily in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to all people in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States. The ACLU of Florida, with headquarters in Miami, is the local affiliate of the national organization. Chartered in 1965, the ACLU of Florida operates with the help of 40 staff members and 18 volunteer-run chapters across the state. The organization’s oldest chapter — the Greater Miami Chapter of the ACLU of Florida — was founded in 1955. The newest chapters — in Collier and Bay Counties — were chartered in May 2007.

Aqua Foundation

The Aqua Foundation for Women (formerly known as the Women’s Community Fund), is a not-for-profit corporation which grew from the Women’s Fund of the Gay and Lesbian Foundation of South Florida. In April of 2004, the Women’s Fund with the blessing of the GLFSF created their own non-profit organization, The Aqua Foundation for Women, whose primary mission is to promote the equality, strength, health and visibility of South Florida lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (LBT) women. Monies raised during the Fund’s signature event, Aqua Girl® Week, as well as through individual and group donations go directly to educate, empower and foster the women’s communities.

Care Resource

Care Resorce is a 501[c](3) non-profit, multi-cultural, community based AIDS service organization, which “Through education, prevention, research, care & treatment, and support service, Care Resource improves upon the health and overall quality of life of our diverse South Florida communities in need.” Rooted in the 1998 merger of Health Crisis Network (1983) and Community Research Initiative (1989), Care Resource is now South Florida’s oldest and largest HIV/AIDS service organization and a true leader in the community.

Empower U

Empower “U”, Inc. is a private, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) minority, peer-based and managed organization founded by and for people living with HIV/AIDS. Empower “U”, Inc. grew from the need of the infected community to become involved in finding and linking to care, HIV positive individuals who are marginally connected or not receiving medical care and services. Empower U continues to advocate for and serve those who do not have voices.

GLBT Suicide Awareness Initiative at Switchboard of Miami

The GLBT Suicide Awareness Initiative (at the Switchboard of Miami) provides suicide information and support in Miami-Dade County. Learn the facts about depression and suicide. Help a friend. Help yourself. Counselors readily speak English, Spanish and Creole, and however they can accommodate any language. Call them 24/7 at: 305-646-3600.

Lambda Legal

Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work.

Miami Beach Gay Pride

Miami Beach Gay Pride’s mission is to produce an annual celebration of events to raise awareness and inspire appreciation and acceptance of the vibrant Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender community in South Florida.

Miami Bridge Youth and Family Services

For more than 20 years, The Miami Bridge has worked to keep kids off the streets. The Bridge is a not-for-profit organization that provides emergency shelter, food and, just as importantly, counseling for troubled youths and their families. The Bridge works to rescue kids from lives of victimization and crime, and in so doing, helps our community ensure that these kids have the opportunity to become productive members of our society.

Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce

The Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (MDGLCC) is the largest not-for-profit corporation in the county for gay and lesbian businesses. With membership on the rise, the Chamber’s mission is to promote a unified and thriving, gay and gay-friendly, business and professional community throughout Miami-Dade County. Our goals are to promote networking within the existing gay and gay-friendly business and professional community, to promote business opportunities for Chamber members, to promote Miami as a year-round, gay and gay-friendly tourist destination, to provide resources for our members, and to provide outreach from our community to other organizations.

National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force bolsters the strength of local LGBT activism in rural enclaves, small towns and cities nationwide. They build grassroots political muscle at every level by training activists, strengthening the infrastructure of local and state allies and organizing broad-based campaigns creating public support for full equality of LGBT people.

PFLAG Miami/Bilingual

Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians & Gays (PFLAG) is a national non-profit organization with over 200,000 members and supporters and over 500 affiliates in the United States.

Pride Center at Equality Park

The Pride Center at Equality Park (formerly the Gay & Lesbian Community Center of South Florida) serves the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender community. They provide information, education, advocacy, support, human services, cultural experiences, and social opportunities. The Center works to foster personal development and quality for life for the entire community.

SoBe Aids Project

Anonymous and confidential HIV testing is available six days a week as well as HIV positive support groups. Individual counseling services are available. We offer educational seminars, HIV prevention outreach in the clubs and bars of SoBe through our programs and HIV information. You can also learn about the Syphilis epidemic that Miami Beach is currently experiencing. Our online AIDS Resource Directory provides up to date listings of HIV/AIDS service providers countywide.

Sunserve

Recognizing that everyone has the right for quality services and care, Sunerve’s mission is to reach out to those in need with an emphasis on the economically disadvantaged, and marginalized youth, senior adults, and people of differing abilities and life changing health conditions in the greater South Florida metropolitan area.

Switchboard of Miami

Switchboard of Miami, Inc. established in 1968, is a private, nonprofit organization that provides the Miami-Dade County community with comprehensive telephone crisis counseling, suicide prevention, information and referral services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Switchboard also offers free individual and family counseling services and prevention programs for high-risk youth and their families based in local schools.

The Village South

For over thirty (30) years, The Village has been providing comprehensive (holistic) multidimensional treatment to adults and adolescents, males and females, suffering from chemical dependency, mental illness, dual disorders, delinquency and related behavioral problems. Each year, more than 1000 adolescents, adults and/or their families, most of whom are indigent, receive clinical services at The Village.

Trevor Project

The Trevor Project is the leading national organization focused on crisis and suicide prevention efforts among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth. The Trevor Project operates the only accredited, nationwide, around-the-clock crisis and suicide prevention helpline for LGBTQ youth. Unity on the Bay

Unity on the Bay is a prosperous, expanding spiritual community of God’s light, love and peace radiating the Unity message globally. Their mission is to pray, educate, serve and celebrate to inspire and transform ourselves, our community and our world.
